About Boombox

Summer 2004. Two musicians from the band Tartak - vocalist Andriy Khlyvnyuk and guitarist Andriy "Mukha" Samoilo - started playing together just for themselves, no plans for a band. Samoilo bought an acoustic guitar, Khlyvnyuk heard the chords and started humming. A month later DJ Valentyn "Valik" Matiuk, also from Tartak, joined them. That's how Boombox happened - no concept, no producer, almost by accident.

The genre is hard to put in a box. Funk, jazz, pop, rock, hip-hop - all of it, all at once. Critics didn't know where to file them. Radio stations were throwing the discs in the bin without listening. Then Vakhtyeram landed on Moscow's biggest stations and everything clicked. But that's a different story.

In March 2025 Ukraine's Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications granted Boombox the status of critically important for the economy and life of the population. One of only two acts to receive it, alongside Bez Obmezhen.

History: from first recordings to the front line

The debut album Melomaniia was recorded in April 2005. In 19 hours. Three consecutive studio sessions at FuckSubmarinStudio. Khlyvnyuk later said it felt more like improvisation than proper work on material - and that's exactly how Melomaniia sounds.

Family Biznes (2006, Moon Records) was a completely different record. Banjo, slide guitar, piano, carefully crafted sound. Over 100, 000 copies sold - gold in Ukraine. The stations that had been binning their discs a year earlier now put Vakhtyeram in prime rotation. Summer 2007, the song hit Russia's biggest radio stations. Khlyvnyuk wrote it walking home from a date.

2014. Boombox stopped performing in Russia - contracts, shows, any presence there. No press release, no explanation. They just stopped going.

24 February 2022 Khlyvnyuk didn't wait. He put on a uniform and joined the Sofia patrol police unit to defend Kyiv. A mortar attack wounded him in the face. After hospital he went back to duty, then east. In 2023 he took command of his own drone reconnaissance unit.

Between combat shifts - he walked out into a square and sang Oy u Luzi Chervona Kalyna a cappella. In uniform. A Ukrainian Sich Riflemen hymn from 1914. The video circled the world in hours. South African musician The Kiffness made a remix and sent all streaming revenue to the Armed Forces. Pink Floyd - dormant for 28 years - got back together and recorded Hey, Hey, Rise Up! with Khlyvnyuk singing.

Band members

Andriy Khlyvnyuk, born 31 December 1979, Cherkasy. Vocals, lyrics. Studied accordion, enrolled as a translator at Cherkasy University and started singing on the side. Band Mandarynovy Rai, won Perlyny Sezonu in 2001, moved to Kyiv, Tartak, and eventually Boombox. Now a soldier. Order For Courage III degree.

Discography

Melomaniia (2005) - debut, 19 hours of recording, FuckSubmarinStudio. You can hear they were having fun.

Family Biznes (2006) - Gold. 100, 000 sold. Vakhtyeram, Khottabych, Koroleva. Banjo and slide guitar next to scratches - at the time that combination sounded like nothing else around.

III (2008) - third record. The band kept building an audience in both countries.

Vse Vklyucheno / All Included (2010) - a minimal rock-and-roll release, two tracks.

Seredniy Vik / Middle Age (November 2011) - fourth studio album, big tour.

+ (2014) - the year they left Russia. Fifth album.

Tayemnyi Kod: Rubikon: Part 1 (12 September 2019) - recorded in Ukraine, France and the US. Duet Bezodnya with Tina Karol, collaboration with Jamala.

ZHYVYI / ALIVE (2026) - mini-album. First new songs after a long break, presented at the May 2026 Kyiv concerts.

Notable collaborations: Zlyva with Jamala and Dmytro Shurov - YUNA Best Song and Best Duet 2016. Bezodnya with Tina Karol (2019). Hey, Hey, Rise Up! with Pink Floyd (2022).

Concerts and where the money goes

Since August 2022 all ticket revenue goes to the Andriy Khlyvnyuk Foundation. Specifically: drones. Four BPLA SYCH drone systems for 212 TEAM, 426 Unmanned Systems Battalion and the Khyzhak combined brigade - that's one example from one fundraiser.

Before 2026 Boombox played major events in Ukraine just twice - both times at Atlas Festival. Everything else was Europe. The tour is called DRONOTOUR: Krakow, Prague, Warsaw, Berlin, Munich, Malaga. For the diaspora. Tickets plus auctions - all to the front.

16 and 17 May 2026 - first solo Kyiv concerts in four years. Blockbuster Mall. The venue has Ukraine's largest certified shelter, 50, 000 square metres, capacity 25, 000 - the organisers chose it deliberately. People who bought tickets back in 2022 for the cancelled Palace of Sports concerts came in on those same tickets.

Awards

Order For Courage III degree - Andriy Khlyvnyuk. YUNA Best Song and Best Duet for Zlyva (2016). In November 2024 Khlyvnyuk declined the international Magnitsky Award - said he couldn't accept it while some fellow laureates were uncertain about giving Ukraine weapons.
