Boombox: from experiments to hits of all time
About the band
Boombox's compositions are timeless. They are known by heart and recognized from the first notes for several generations, and their manner of performance can always be distinguished from a thousand other rock musicians in Ukraine. What is "Vakhteram", which people call "Belie oboi", "Bobik", "Ta4to"? These are mega-hits, which not only made the band famous but also put Ukraine on a special pedestal of the world rock creation.
Who has ever attended a Boombox concert, knows what an incredible atmosphere it is. The members of the band, especially Andriy Hlyvnyuk, interact with the public so well that it seems as if everybody knows each other for many years. Joy and drive are in the air.
During his long and rather successful creative way, Boombox gathered an incredible army of admirers which amounts to hundreds of thousands. So you need to hurry up and buy a ticket in advance to get to the band's concert.
A boombox is a self-contained cassette recorder that gained popularity in the 80s. By naming their band the same way, the members put freedom, love of music and the absence of any academic-musical framework into the term. That's why guys often referred their creativity to an informal hangout, where they could experiment and mix several musical styles, producing something incredible and catchy.
Boombox's music is lyrical, which can touch something very important in the soul of the listeners, but at the same time, it has power and is ready to lead entire generations. Hip-hop, jazz, funk, rock, DJ-sketching are mixed here and all of it is advantageously spiced up with soulful vocals and deep meaning of the songs themselves. Often, Boombox's hits were pieced together into quotations. Poetess Vera Polozkova, for example, always includes a reading of "Ta4to" in her programme.
Group history
The Boombox's history goes back to 2004. At that time the band was established as a "supplementary" project, where each member could realize his or her creative ideas and experiments. It was a special outlet, music "for themselves". The guys from the Boombox group had already been in other bands: Andriy Hlyvnyuk was the soloist in "Grafit", and Valentyn Matiyuk and Andriy Samoilo were members of the "Tartak" rock band.
After that, the life circumstances of each participant changed in such a way that Boombox turned from the status of "for yourself" into a full-fledged project, which had to be promoted and developed. Andriy Hlyvnyuk's main band was on holiday, so he took a responsible step and chose to channel all of his musical potentials into Boombox. Andriy Samoilo and Valentyn Matiyuk had to leave Tartak as the band leader Alexander Polozhinsky, upon learning of the existence of a separate project, considered it a betrayal.
It was thanks to such dramatic life situations that the unconventional boombox group burst onto the battlefield of Ukrainian show-business. For the first time, Ukrainians heard the band (still a trio at that moment) performing live at the annual rock festival "Chaika" in Kyiv.
Since then and up to this day Boombox remains popular, some of their albums were certified gold and their songs are flying in all directions, occupying a special place in the hearts of millions of listeners. So if you come across a Boombox poster, make sure to get a ticket.
Collaborations
Since the creativity of Boombox does not provide any creative framework, the guys often played with guest artists, including Tonique Le DeeJay (member of TNMK), rap singer Dmitry Shurov and others.
Also in the performance of Boombox new sounding, and sometimes even life was found in the compositions "Poshel von" by VIA Gra, "Letniy dojd`" by Talkov Igor, "Zvezdi ne ezdyat na metro" by Mashina Vremeni.
Joint creative wave Boombox caught many bands and performers, creating real hits, which rotate for several years without losing their popularity. Such compositions include:
- "Zdes` daje solnca ne vidno" in collaboration with Vasiliy Vakulenko, we know him as Basta;
- "Bezodnya" in duet with sensual Tina Karol;
- Also in the set of joint works, there is a song with Ukrainian rock-band, participant of Eurovision O.Torvald "Vecher v Rio";
- "Angela" featuring Oleksandra Koltsova, lead singer of the band Kryhitka.
If you want to buy a ticket for Boombox, but you don't know the repertoire of the concert, be sure that some of these songs will be played for sure. And it's definitely worth your attention.
Composition
As said before, the initial line-up of Boombox consisted of three people: vocalist and lyrics writer Andrey Hlyvnyuk, guitarist Andrey Samoilo and DJ Valentin Matiyuk. Later, the team expanded to include another string maestro Dmitry Kuvaldin, bassist Denis Levchenko, drummer Alexander Lyulyakin and keyboardist Pavel Litvinenko.
In 2018, Boombox co-founder Andrei Samoilo decides to leave the group. A year later, Inna Nevoit also comes in to fill the vacant bassist position.
But the band we see on stage is by no means the whole team working on the Boombox brand. No less fruitful, but already behind the scenes the real Boombox Family works: producer Alexey Sogomonov, sound director Igor Melnik, and together with him video director Kirill Vinogradov. Not a single performance and sale of Boombox tickets passes without the band's concert director Vitaliy Kharenko.
Discography
Their debut album "Melomania" was presented a year after the creation of the group. The guys recorded the record in a record-breakingly short time - 19 hours. But the managers delayed the release. But guys didn't wait for an official presentation and started to give their work away to friends and acquaintances.
In 2006 the second and most popular album "Family Business" was released. It got gold certification in Ukraine.
Two more years later, the world saw work with the laconic title "III". In 2011, “Sredniy Vik” (Middle Age) was released. In 2013 — “Terminal B”. The next album the fans had to wait for 6 years, but the new work consisted of two parts and was called The Secret Code.
